Leadership is expected of every Marine, regardless of rank. While leadership is traditionally forged in the unit and operational environment, off-duty service provides a high-impact proving ground to hone critical soft skills—such as adaptability, clear communication, and team dynamics.

Volunteering is more than giving back; it actively develops Marine Corps Total Fitness. Whether coordinating a local food drive, mentoring youth, or organizing community cleanups, stepping into volunteer roles builds confidence, reduces isolation, and strengthens community ties.

Pathways to Lead and Grow
The Volunteer Management Program (VMP) provides opportunities to lead through service while developing communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

The Single Marine Program (SMP) offers community volunteer projects, recreation, and social activities that strengthen peer relationships and help reduce isolation. Through SMP councils, Marines can represent their units, raise quality-of-life concerns, collaborate with SMP staff and leadership, and help shape initiatives that affect single Marines.

Intramural and Youth Sports provide opportunities to practice teamwork, accountability, communication, and resilience while supporting physical fitness and stress management. Whether you’re a teammate or coach, sports create opportunities to build trust and practice leadership.

Take the Initiative
Every opportunity to serve is an opportunity to lead. Getting involved builds resilience, expands your network, and ensures you are ready for the unexpected challenges of military leadership.

Connect with your installation's Single Marine Program or local Volunteer Coordinator today to find upcoming opportunities and start leading where you stand.
